Dee sailors gave a great showing at Abersoch Mirror Week this year coming away with trophies for both outright winners and first junior boat.
It was great to see that in a fleet of 43 boats, 6 were from DSC, including a fantastic guest appearance from John and Archie Wyles all the way from British Columbia!
The early days saw very light winds and this played to the strengths of our Rear Commodore with Lee and Barnaby Matthews taking the lead in the fleet on day 1. Close behind them, in our lovely club Mirrrors, were Matthew and Harriet Waddington along with James and Josh Waddington.
There were also creditable performances from John and Archie as well Duncan and Lauren Swinson. The final pairing came from Jonathan and Pamela Waddington, ensuring that the Waddington’s picked up a certificate in recognition of the whole family being on the water.
Having taken the lead after day 1, Lee and Barnaby weren’t going to give it up without a fight and went on to win further races whilst ensuring they were never outside the top 4 boats. Matthew and Harriet pushed the adults hard keeping all their positions in the top 10 and finishing with a great 5th in the final race. James and Josh were desperate for a discard to rub out a tricky first race and were alongside Matthew and Harriet for many of the races including securing an excellent 4th. It was great to see sibling rivalry take a back seat (albeit only for a short period!) when one of the adult boats felt he could take advantage and muscle in on two junior boats: Little did he know that these boats were crewed by four siblings and what ensued seemed to have some learns taken from Wombaff !
In the end Lee and Barnaby held onto their lead to be crowned overall winners. Matthew and Harriet took first junior boat and 8th overall, sharing the same points total as 6th and 7th, whilst James and Josh came in as second junior boat and 10th overall. Great performances from our top boats.
As ever the whole week was a blast on and off the water and its fair to say that late night debriefing and in depth planning over beer and large quantities of red wine seems to agree with DSC’s adult sailors’ strategy!
