Spring Junior/Youth Success /Updates

Many thanks to James for this update on the Junior scene:

The DEE SC junior sailors have been busy again in the spring qualification and racing series which traditionally follow the winter training sessions.

Optimists:

Max Spedding (having trained with the RYA West zone squad) and Charlie Ewing have regularly attended the North West Travellers.

Both James, Max and Charlie attended the Lowton Junior Open and scored excellent 1 st and 3 rd positions

James Hazelwood trained with the RYA National Intermediate Optimist squad during the winter and his schedule in the spring has included the spring championships at Weymouth and the Optimist team trials (invitation only) for the summer international events. James finished in 24 th place in the team trials and based on that will now represent GBR at the French National championships in Brittany in the summer.

Max , Charlie and James flew the DSC flag at the recent Optimist inland championships, over 250 entries. James had an excellent event winning a race and finishing 13 th overall.

Max finished a respectable 106 th and Charlie survived his first major event in very testing conditions with winds up to 35 knots each day.

Tom and Abby Sanders have been out with the DSC optimists at Budworth sailing club taining with Olympic silver medalist Joe Glanfield and Sam and David Bain have been out at DSC along with Robbie Douglas.

Mirror:

James Hazelwood and Alex Douglas have joined up as team ‘Dougwood’ to compete at the Mirror World championships which will be held at Pwhelli in the summer.

420:

Mike Moruzzi and Jonny Harris concluded their winter training by competing at the 420 GBR team selection trials in Weymouth and Largs. They also competed at the RYA National Youth Nationals at Largs. The event was plagued by winds which varied from 30knts to 0knts in a matter of minutes.

Laser Radial:

Cameron Douglas has also been competing at Youth Nationals and finished 13 th out of 100 boats. He has also competed at the recent GBR team selection trial over 3 weekends in Stokes Bay, Highcliffe and Lowestoft. At the end of the 3 events he was placed 3 youth overall (and 4 th in the national ladder), he has qualified for the RYA GBR team for the Laser Radial Youth Europeans in Denmark (July) and the Youth Worlds in Japan (August). Cam is looking for any willing sponsors or more paper rounds!
